Description

This auction is for a beautiful lot of 10 pieces of hand-made assorted Theresienthal  Glassware.  Most of the pieces are from the Juwel line (which is characterized by simple clean lines and a very subtle gold accent).  The pieces in the Juwel line include the following:

One Decanter with Stopper measuring approximately 15.5 inches tall with the stopper.
One pitcher measuring approximately 11 inches in height
5 Beer pedestal  glasses each about 4 7/8 inches high and 3 inches in diameter
One martini glass measuring about 5 3/4 inches high and 4 1/4 inches in diameter

There are also two candlesticks - about 7 1/2 inches high.

The art of glassmaking developed from the tradition of the so-called "flying" glassworks. In order to make glass, great amounts of wood were needed to fire the furnaces and to produce potash, which is one of the basic materials for making glass. Hence, it was no wonder the Bavarian Forest turned into a glassmaking region in the Middle Ages. Once the timber surrounding their mobile glassworks had been cut down, the glassmakers moved on and set up their workshops in a new place. It was only in the early 19th century that it became possible to transport large amounts of wood over long distances and people began to establish “permanent” glassworks.

In September of 1836 Franz Steigerwald founded such a glassworks in the form of a manufactory, and named it "Theresien Thal" after Queen Therese of Bavaria, wife of Ludwig I. The King himself supported Steigerwald in establishing the manufactory and granted him monopoly to certain kinds of glass. Theresienthal did not fail to keep its promise  -  in the shortest period of time, the crowned glass with the special lustre managed to conquer the high society of the great cities, the royal courts of Europe, and the hearts of crystal glass lovers around the world.
